Men Like Trees Walking

He shall be like a tree . . .
Psalm 1:3

Recommend Reading
Jeremiah 17:5-8

If you had to describe yourself as a tree, what kind would you be? A stately oak? A melancholy willow? A fruitful peach tree? A fast growing maple? A crab apple?

This isn't just "psycho-babble." It's a biblical question, for the Lord compares us to trees. Psalm 92:12 says that the righteous shall flourish like palm trees and grow like the cedars of Lebanon. King David wrote, "I am like a green olive tree in the house of God" (Psalm 52:8).

Jeremiah taught that those who trust God are like trees whose roots tap into underground channels of water during dry seasons (Jeremiah 17:8); and Psalm 1 promises that those who meditate day and night on biblical truth will be like trees planted by the river, bringing forth fruit in season and avoiding the wilting influence of drought.

What a wonderful picture! The strength of a godly person is maintained by supplies of grace drawn by trusting in the Word of God. As we walk with God, our roots sink deeper into the Word during storms, so we can draw nourishment from God's Word. As your roots go deeper, your stability grows greater. If you feel like a "bruised reed" today, change your mental image of yourself. Trust God, and grow into a triumphant tree.

. . . rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
Colossians 2:7
